TIME makes an odd cover choice for the US

November 29th, 2011

Is TIME suggesting that Americans don’t give a poop about anything happening way over there in that hot sandy place with this interesting variety of covers for the 12/5 issue?

Playboy kicks everyone’s butt on Facebook

November 29th, 2011

Playboy is making all other magazines on Facebook his bitch. The men’s title has more than double the amount of Facebook Likes than any other magazine (second place Food Network Magazine has about 2.2MM). Why? It looks like their super smart tactic is having Playmates interact with fans through individual pages and then link back to the main Playboy FB page. Take a look at the list of top magazines below… interesting that Playboy is the only book in the top 10 targeting dudes (with the possible exception of The Economist in the #10 spot).

There’s an insider on my subscriber list that may be able to add a nice little comment about this.

Vancouver Aquarium… you’re dumb

November 29th, 2011

Check out the video below of Vancouver Aquariums “groundbreaking” stunt in public places. So… I think this is lame and not warranting of a viral video with an inspirational/deep soundtrack (I realize I’m spreading the lameness by posting this…oh well). These flying fish balloon things are available everywhere… they’re not cool anymore… the kiosk guy flying around toy helicopters at the mall trying to suck your children in and empty your wallet has cooler crap than this. Maybe the Aquarium’s agency should’ve considered creating a NEW version of this toy rather than sending some employees down to Toys R Us. Maybe a life size flying Great White? THAT would’ve been cool. Canada has let me down.

(again… email readers click through for the video)

Lizard from The Amazing Spiderman revealed by PEZ?

November 29th, 2011

It would appear that the first tangible evidence of what Rhys Ifans’ Lizard will look like comes to us in the form of a leaked PEZ dispenser. Odd. What do you think? I’m a little bored by it.

Walgreens adopting mobile coupons at nearly 8,000 locations

November 29th, 2011

Starting on Black Friday, Walgreens started adding 2D, QR code-ish coupons to their mobile app for consumers to scan at more than 7,700 locations… sounds boring, right? Well it’s not. It means that a pretty big retailer is adopting the technology which has been a little slow to pick up in these great United States we call home. So this is a small step in the right direction towards a time when we can use our phones for pretty much everything we normally need to print something out for (coupons, credit cards, transit, vending machines, etc). There are spotty uses for this kind of stuff right now, but it needs more mass adoption.

Westwood losing its second movie theater in two months

November 29th, 2011

After AMC was unable to reach a new lease agreement with their landlords, it was announced that AMC Avco Center 4 will be shutting down this Sunday. Two months back, it was also announced that the Majestic Crest theater in Westwood would also be shutting its doors. Little theaters are really frickin cool… I hope someone picks these locations up (particularly the Majestic) and gets them up and running again ASAP.

Mad Men series ending in a surprising way

November 15th, 2011

POTENTIAL SPOILER: Series creator, Matthew Weiner, has revealed how he intends on ending Mad Men somewhere around 2014. He thinks it would be an interesting end to show where Don Draper ends up in PRESENT TIME. So we’ll be seeing (unless he changes his mind) and 80-something Draper cruising around the world of the 2000’s.

Keeping my fingers crossed they somehow avoid the typically shitty old man makeup (see Entertainment Weekly article here ) and don’t have him work in advertising in present day… people think my job is cool… let’s not ruin that misdirected vision.

How effective is Klout’s new system?

November 15th, 2011

Klout (a tool to measure the influence/reach of a person on social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, etc) just made some changes to their formulas. As a result, some people who depend on their stellar score for free and money shit from advertisers just saw a pretty significant drop in their scores.

The author of the article below talks about the whole Klout system and whether or not it’s a relevant tool for measuring someone’s impact on the world wide web.

Go read it. Especially if you’re an ad person and you don’t know what Klout is.

(Please note that Klout says I’m influential in “Jewish” because I posted a tweet about The Bear Jew in Inglorious Basterds)

Hair-Raising Toyota Ad

November 15th, 2011

I’m not sure I’m totally sure how this works but it looks like when you peel open this direct mail piece for the Toyota Yaris, the electrostatic-friendly materials it’s made out of (foil and plastic) makes your arm hair stand on end.

I raise a glass to you sirs and ma’ams. Not sure a normal consumer would give a crap, but a ad geek like me eats this stuff up.
